Bark is similar in many ways to our own skin and is essential for a tree’s survival. Just like tree bark, our skin is also our largest organ system,  with its purpose being protection, a habitat & as food for our other body systems, all the way down to our roots.

In ancient folklore, the oak was known as the most sacred of all plants. Oak bark is known to have many health-promoting properties, including up to 20% tannins. It’s been used to treat a wide range of maladies in herbal medicine due to its strong astringent properties, making it widely used for treating infections & almost all conditions of the skin. A substance with naturally occurring painkilling properties, its astringing causes the constriction of cells and body tissues to help treat abrasions and contains purifying and detoxifying effects due to its depurative nature.

A natural antibiotic and anti-inflammatory, healing poplar bark & bud extract contains antioxidants revered for its anti-aging effects on skin cells. Propolis, an extract from beehives, is an ingredient that contains similar compounds to those found in poplar buds, which has similar disease fighting benefits.

Willow bark is often called a “modern miracle” because the salicin it contains was used to develop acetylsalicylic acid, a key ingredient in aspirin. Used for centuries for minor pain-relieving purposes and to soothe irritated skin, the skin care benefits of willow bark extract primarily come from its rich supply of salicin. Seen as protectors of health during the Medieval period, juniper berry demonstrates antibacterial and antifungal effects due to being high in flavonoid and polyphenol antioxidants that have strong free radical scavenging abilities.

Bentonite clay is beneficial in removing impurities and tightening the pores, toning the skin, exfoliating dead skin cells and reducing inflammation in acne. It’s used to cleanse, tone, remove impurities, stimulate and exfoliate. Its popularity is well earned because it is one of the most healing clays available. It draws out impurities, absorbs oil/excess sebum and can help repair the skin. Bentonite clay’s adsorbent power may be helpful in treating acne breakouts and oily skin. The clay can help remove sebum, or oil, from the skin’s surface, and it may also have a calming effect on inflamed breakouts. Aloe Vera contains enzymes, antioxidants, vitamins A and C which can treat burns, acne, dry skin and many other skin issues. It is highly anti-inflammatory, can help fade acne scars and blemishes and is suitable for all skin types. The result is smooth, supple, and even-toned skin.
