Flower essences are a homeopathic remedy that have been used for years to help create mind-body-spirit balance.
Lavender is a plant that needs no introduction. It is probably the most soothing scent a person can ever experience. Lavender works as an anxiolytic (an anxiety reliever) and as a sedative, to increase relaxation and calm, and help bring about sleep. Lavender interacts with the neurotransmitter GABA to help quiet the brain and nervous system activity, reducing agitation, anger, aggression, and restlessness. Lavender is a popular aromatherapy choice for sleep and relaxation. Several studies show using lavender for aromatherapy can improve sleep quality, including in people with insomnia, depression, PTSD and anxiety, and it may also increase time spent in deep, slow-wave sleep.
Lavender flowers are known to represent purity, silence, devotion serenity, grace and calmness. In addition to the flower’s significance, its purple color also comes with great symbolism. Purple is the color of royalty and speaks of elegance, refinement and luxury. The spiritual meaning of Amethyst is groundedness, tranquility and calm. The literal meaning of Amethyst is “not intoxicated” – its name translates from the Greek word améthystos. Amethyst is worked with to help restlessness, frustration, and fury leave the body.

Unlike essential oils or herbal extracts that contain the physical substances extracted from plants, there is no physical part of the flower left in a flower essence. Instead they work on similar principles to Homeopathy, in which the life-force and vibrational signature of the plant is imprinted within a water-based matrix. This is achieved through sun-steeping the flowers in water for a period of time. The water is then collected, strained and potentised through dilution methods.
The earliest European recorded use of flower essences was by abbess Hildegard von Bingen in the twelfth century, who would place muslin sheets over flowers at night to absorb their dew, which would then be collected in the morning, rung out, and used to treat people with emotional imbalances. Flower essences work by the principle of resonance within the subtle human energy field, which impacts one’s physical and emotional health. In other words, flower essences are based on vibrational energetics, rather than biochemical, and stimulate the body’s natural capacity to bring itself back to homeostasis. All plants carry vibrational energy patterns, and it is said that flowers are the pinnacle of this energy.
