Mourning Spirit ~ Trauergeist Perfume
CAD $30.00
Black Laurel • Cold Myrrh • Eternal Ash
In old German folk practice, perfumes weren’t purely for adornment; they were protective, cleansing, and meant to fortify body and spirit. Apothecaries and Kräuterfrauen blended resins, woods, and healing herbs believed to purify the air, ease breathing, and calm the soul.
“Trauergeist” is a German word that translates literally to “mourning spirit” or “spirit of grief.” Trauer = mourning, grief, sorrow. Geist = spirit, ghost, essence, or mind
In the ancestral Germanic villages, mourning was an act of devotion, woven from scent, symbol, and the old protective ways.
The dead were washed in herbal water, coffins lined with sprigs, thresholds sealed with bitter smoke. This perfume carries that gravity and grace.
Black laurel and cypress stand at the gates of remembrance, their resinous shadow steeped in cold frankincense and myrrh, as once burned in Lutheran churches.
Wormwood, mugwort, and rue sharpen the air with their boundary-setting force, keeping restless spirits from crossing back.
Tansy and rosemary, once tucked into coffins for purity and remembrance, mingle with the earth-rich pull of vetiver and oak ash.
Labdanum and dark benzoin warm the lingering base, echoing the candlelit vigils of a still house.
It is the scent of closed curtains, hushed voices, and a path lined with pine boughs. For protection, for release, for honouring the spirit’s journey onward.
Our perfumes are composed from plants ~ wildcrafted roots, resins, absolutes, extracts, flowers and fragrant botanicals.
